Make sure its watercolors on watercolor paper for best results. In my experience the 2 major mistakes done in watercolors is not using good paper and working to small. Working to small means tiny detail that gets muddy. With ATCs do a study of a detail of something or just one object. Have fun and don't feel self conscious. Another reason to use a 140 lb. cold press watercolor paper with some rag in it is it can be washed. If you over work a painting rinse it off and repaint. I do it all the time.
